Abstract | The continued use of non-renewable energy sources, such as fossil fuels, has highlighted the negative impacts caused by greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). With the need to minimize dependence on energy sources of this type, the transition to a more sustainable energy matrix has been widely extended on an international scale. On a national scale, Brazil has the potential to favor the implementation of renewable energy generation systems, with emphasis on photovoltaic energy, which has been the source with the highest increase in installed capacity in the world. Due to its geographical location, the country receives high incidence rates of solar radiation and is relatively uniform throughout the national territory, which allows the development of viable solar projects in different regions. Furthermore, the potential impacts of climate change put pressure on hydroelectric energy generation, which is highly dependent on precipitation and its variability, and therefore carries a high risk of scarcity. In this regard, strategies that seek to increase energy security with lower environmental impact are the main ways to enable a sustainable and fair energy transition, as well as one of the possible mechanisms to address climate change. Thus, the objective of this work is to bring a discussion on the challenges and opportunities of sustainable energy transition, with a focus on the case of Brazil, in order to provide pathways for this process. |
